1. Lots of driving today as I had to go down to the San Diego store, but the drive itself wasn't bad and I got a lot of audiobook listening in, and things seem to be improving at the store, so hopefully that keeps up.

2. Yesterday I found Jasper with his arms around Ollie's neck for grooming, and he kept pausing in the grooming but keeping his hold on Ollie and Ollie honestly just loved it.

1. We finished up another puzzle today. This is the first 500 piece one we've completed. It actually didn't feel much more difficult than the 300 piece ones as the characters are all pretty well differentiated colorwise (which is why I bought it). A fun one for sure.

2. This afternoon I had to drive around to four of our stores (three of which were our more distant ones while still being in the greater LA area) with a couple guys here on a business trip from our Hawaii branch. Didn't love that I had to change my schedule when this week is already pretty packed (this was only decided on Friday) but it was a pretty enjoyable afternoon showing them around the stores.

3. I have one of those phone wallets that sticks on the back of your phone and holds a few credit cards/driver's license, and tonight after work I picked it up from my desk and noticed all the cards were gone. I knew they were there yesterday because I got gas, but I couldn't remember when I'd last seen them after that. Thankfully they had just fallen out in the car and not somewhere else! I'll have to be more careful about it from now on.

4. Look at that cutie curly tail Gemma's showing off.

1. Recently Carla saw a video on youtube about making pistachio pesto and she tried that the other day and it turned out so good! We've been having it on sandwiches, mostly roast beef but also ham. It was fine with the ham but amazing with the beef.

2. I had an all day meeting today but was able to get a bunch of small stuff done on my to-do list here and there during the day. Tomorrow I've got a busy work day, too, but at least don't have to get an early start.

3. You can tell this is Molly's spot on my bed by how much white fur there is.

1. We walked up to the little independent coffee shop this morning and got matcha (Carla) and hojicha (me) lattes. They have a bunch of really interesting sounding lattes on their menu but so far the best have been these really creamy ones called einspäaut;nner. Carla has been getting the matcha one every time we go there, but this was my first time trying the hojicha and I think it's my new fave.

2. Monday is often a work from home day recently and I usually don't have meetings so during the week I tend to put all sorts of deskwork on my next Monday to-do list. Usually it's not an overwhelming amount but today was kind of a lot. Thankfully it was mostly all small things, but the quantity was a bit overwhelming. I did get almost everything done, and was able to put a few lower priority things off till Friday or later (unfortunately I have a jam-packed Tuesday through Thursday and will have little time for deskwork so that's one reason I had so much on my plate today).

3. Chloe has such impressive whiskers.

1. We had a nice time at Disneyland this morning. So much stuff to do and see (and eat) with the 70th anniversary!

2. Look at these sweet brothers!

It's officially Disneyland's 70th anniversary (Friday was the first day) and there is a ton of stuff going on. Thankfully there are several months to take in everything.

Reading: I finished M.L. Wang's Blood Over Bright Haven--very good, also rather grim on account of centering on a magic system that colonialist right to the marrow.

Now I'm reading both Emily Tesh's The Incandescent and Jennifer 8 Lee's The Fortune Cookie Chronicles: Adventures in the World of Chinese Food. (In practice, that means I started the latter when I hadn't yet picked up The Incandescent and knew I wanted to read it promptly, so I needed to pick up a non-fiction book to tide me over until I bought it. So The Fortune Cookie Chronicles is most likely just on hold while I get through the novel.)

Watching: Last week's episode of The Last of Us, a few more episodes of The Pitt, and one [1] episode of Murderbot. (I'm hoping to see the second tonight, but we'll see how it goes.)

Weathering: A couple of days ago we had unseasonably summer-like temperatures, but now it's back down to consistently below 10°C (and mostly gray/rainy). *shivers*

1. We saw 43 dogs today. A new record!

2. We walked up to the farmers market this morning and I finally got a jar of the orange almond butter I love so much. The last time I bought some, they were out of the orange so I just got the honey almond butter, which is good, but not nearly as good as the orange one. But I didn't want to buy a jar of the orange until I finished the honey, which I just did yesterday.

3. Apparently there are some interactive things for the Disneyland 70th anniversary, so I found my magic band and got that charged up today so I'm ready for tomorrow's trip. I can't wait to see all the anniversary stuff.

4. Gemma hardly ever goes in these little cat apartments but she was in there yesterday.

Well, this turned out to be a big dud. I didn't feel like the twists worked very well, and the MC was just kind of annoying. There was also some really unpleasant ablism that didn't just seem to be the MC's POV, but rather presented as fact.

Death Row
Short story from the author of the Housemaid series. A woman is on death row for killing her husband, but days before she's scheduled to be executed, she sees a man visiting the prison she's convinced is her husband. spoilers )

Love Languages
Cute graphic novel about a young English woman working in France who meets a woman from Hong Kong there as an au pair and they become friends and then more than friends despite the language barrier. I really like how the comic used a mix of English, French, and Cantonese (with in line translations for the latter two) to show how they struggle to communicate.

Boku ga Shinu Dake no Hyaku Monogatari vol. 1-3
Spotted this on Amazon Japan and when I clicked on it, there was a limited time read-free promo for the first three volumes. An elementary school girl sees her classmate about to climb out a window and tells him about the "hundred ghost stories" in hopes of keeping him from killing himself. After a hundred days of telling ghost stories, a real ghost will appear. The rest of the manga is the boy telling the stories, one story per chapter. Each story is pretty good for a short horror story, and there is the framing story of what's going on with the boy. There's usually a couple of pages before and after each ghost story, and things in his house get weirder and weirder as the series goes on. I'm enjoying this a lot and definitely going to read the rest.
Last time we saw They Might Be Giants it was an outdoor venue and was raining the whole time, so while it was a great show, it was not the most pleasant experience. Thankfully this time it was indoors (and not raining).

It was at the Orpheum, which is one of the many old theaters in downtown LA. This was my first time seeing a show there and it's really nice, as well as being just a few blocks from a train station, so we were able to take the train down there and save ourselves the hassle of rush hour traffic and money on parking, too.

I had checked the venue's website the day before to see if there were any opening acts and there weren't, but instead TMBG were going to play two sets (which is what they'd done at the previous show we'd gone to as well).

Doors were at seven and I wasn't sure how long it would take us to get down there so allowed plenty of time. We got there a bit after doors opened and there was no line outside anymore. Carla wanted to get some merch, so we got in the merch line, which was pretty long at that point, but there was still like 45 minutes before the show, so what else were we doing.

After that, we got some food (a very tasty cheeseburger and very mid fries) and ate awkwardly in our seats before the show started. They actually started at about 8:15, so we ended up having plenty of time to finish our food first.

For the first set they played mostly songs from Mint Car, and I did not know any of them. I'm not as big a fan of the band as Carla is, so while I like the songs I know, I am not actually that familiar with their whole discography. But it was still very enjoyable.

They took a twenty minute break, during which Carla got some lemonade (which had mint in it and was super tasty) and a surprisingly good chocolate chip cookie, and then they came back on for another set, which also ended up being almost all songs I didn't know lol.

After the encore, we started heading out and the lights didn't immediately come on so I wasn't sure if they were just waiting for the band to get on stage or there would be a second encore. In the lobby, a woman was telling someone they should go back since it looked like the band was going to come back on, but we decided to just head out. As it happens they played two more songs, including Birdhouse in Your Soul, which we both really like, so I wish we had stayed, but oh well.

set list )

This was them performing Dr Worm:

Despite not knowing most of the songs, I had a great time (and Carla had an even better time since she actually did know the songs). For sure would go to that venue again, too. Very nice and convenient.

1. We went to see They Might Be Giants tonight and it was a fun show. (I'll have a separate post tomorrow.) The venue was downtown and since Carla is in better shape now and able to walk more, I checked the other day to see if we could take the train down there instead of driving, since rush hour traffic heading downtown any night is terrible, and even worse on a Friday night. Plus we'd have to pay at least $20 for parking. Turns out the venue is just about half a mile from a train stop, and the stop by our house is about half a mile from us, so not much walking at all. And the train is only $1.75 each way.

Because of how bad traffic is, the train took less time to get down there than it would have taken driving, but took longer going home (since it was late at night and would have had no traffic), but was much more pleasant since I could just read. I wish more of the places I regularly go for concerts were easier to get to on public transport (probably all of them could be gotten to, but usually only on buses and with more transfers, rather than just one straight shot on the train), but I will definitely keep it in mind next time we go to a show downtown. (I did take the train to see a concert at the Staples Center once, which is also right near a train stop (even closer, actually), but have not been to another show downtown that was convenient to the train since then, alas.)

2. I got an email from Nintendo today about Switch 2 preorders, and from the subject line I was afraid it was going to be saying they're sold out, but it was just saying not to worry, I'm still in the queue. So that's good to know! (We do have a preorder locked in with Best Buy, but would like to get one for each of us.)

3. I thought ahead and did not make Disney reservations tomorrow since I knew we'd be out late for the concert tonight, so tomorrow we can just have a relaxing day at home. (We will be going to Disneyland on Sunday, though, and today was the first day of the 70th anniversary celebration so there's going to be tons of stuff to see/do/eat.)

1. After seeing [personal profile] cimorene's post about chocolate lava cakes, it made me want to get the ones from Domino's again, so when we got pizza tonight we ordered a side of lava cakes as well. Annoyingly, they now come in a three pack instead of a two pack, so we have one random lava cake leftover. But they are very rich, so we could just split that one and it would still be satisfying.

2. We finished another puzzle today.

1. I had a couple meetings today but actually managed to get a bunch of stuff on my to-do list done in between them.

2. The delicious chamoy Kettle Chips we were buying from the independent neighborhood market have been sold out, but today Carla looked on the Kettle Chips website and it said that Whole Foods sells them, so we walked up there this evening and they did indeed have them! With the weather getting warmer, we've been having sandwiches a lot for lunches and dinners and these chips go perfectly with every type of sandwich we've had.

3. I was surprised to see Chloe get up on my desk yesterday. She hardly ever does now that Carla's desk with its high cupboard that allowed them to get up on the bookshelves is not in here. But she just wandered over and checked things out and then left lol.

1. It was Gemma's turn to go to the vet today. After the whole thing with Molly's claw, we want to make sure that doesn't happen again to anyone, and Gemma is so suspicious and spicy that we have never been able to trim her claws. (We did get Chloe's done the other day, though, and that was almost as easy as doing the boys, so shouldn't be an issue going forward.) So since Gemma was overdue for some shots, I went ahead and made an appointment to get those done and have them trim her claws while we were there. It was very stressful for her and she had an accident in the carrier (both poop and pee) but she got her shots and her claws trimmed and doesn't need to go to the vet for a while now.

We really do need to find a solution to trim her nails at home. Does anyone have tips for highly suspicious/spicy cats who do not like to be held? The biggest problem is catching her, and I don't want that to be super stressful, but she is so suspicious of us that sometimes even just taking her picture or even looking at her make her run away.

2. Someone left a puzzle in our little library and it looks like an interesting one, so I added it to the collection. The one we're working on right now is fine, but not one I think I'd want to do again, so I was already planning on putting it out there when we're finished. So maybe the person who left that puzzle will find ours.

3. Love that coy look.

1. Had another work from home day. Loads of things on my work to-do list and all of them were just stuff to do at the computer, which I can do more comfortably from home and save myself a commute, so that's just what I did. Tomorrow will be mostly WFH as well, since I still have a ton more similar tasks on my to-do list and no meetings scheduled.

2. The heat spell is over and the temps are back down in the 60s (50s at night). We had all the windows open over the weekend but I closed the ones in my bedroom this morning and by the evening we closed them all, as it was not only quite chilly but really windy as well.

3. On Saturday when it was really warm, I looked out the window by my bed and found Tuxie napping in the weeds. This area is just a narrow space (like two feet) between the house and the neighbors' fence, and there's a large bush that kind of blocks it from the front, so the gardeners never get in and trim the weeds, so they're really overgrown and make a nice bed for napping. I checked on him several times after that and he was there for ages, just changing his position every once in a while to get more sun or more shade.

1. It was definitely still warm today (really didn't appreciate it while vacuuming!) but was nicer than yesterday, and aside from a walk to the store in the morning and another around the neighborhood in the evening (by which time it had cooled off a lot), we mostly spent it indoors and the house was very pleasant.

2. I totally forgot to mention this in yesterday's post but we ordered dinner from Shake Shack last night and the order was two burgers and a shake. The order arrived later than expected, and whatever, I'm not going to complain about that or the food being cooler than I prefer, because that's just always a possibility with delivery. But although the shake was in a cupholder, someone had put it in sideways, rather than upright, so the whole thing leaked out and not only was my shake ruined but the burgers as well. I can't imagine someone at the restaurant packing the shake like that, so I can only imagine the delivery driver repacked it that way for some reason??? Anyway, thankfully the restaurant is not actually that far away, so I just took the bag with everything back and had them remake it. Annoying to have to do that in the first place, but at least I wasn't left with no dinner (I'm sure I could have gotten a refund over the phone, but I wanted the actual food, especially the seasonal banana shake, which I'd been excited about and was indeed delicious).

Hidden Figures
Finally finished this! There is also a young readers version that's about half as long and I wonder if that might be the better way to go, because this was just really plodding and felt like a slog to get through.

How to Seal Your Own Fate
This was fun. I hope there will be more books in the series.

Hammers on Bone
This is not just Lovecraft-inspired but straight-up Lovecraft fanfic, and as someone who has never actually read any Lovecraft and only knows a few character names and concepts from general osmosis, I felt like I was missing a lot. If that had been more clear in the summary I wouldn't have picked it up in the first place. In addition to that, I just did not like really anything about it. The main character for some reason talks like a stereotype of a noir detective, but in a really grating way. The best thing it had going for it was that it was really short. I have another novella by this author on my to-read list, but honestly this does not make me want to read more from them.

Paranoid Gardens
I picked up this graphic novel because it's by Gerard Way but it was pretty disappointing. So much is going on. Way too much. There's superheroes and aliens and a weird cult based on a cartoon character.

Motherlover
I actually read this a while back on the author's patreon, but it's finally out for real. Super cute f/f graphic novel about a couple of neighbors falling for each other.

Hey, Mary!
Did not realize Andrew Wheeler had a new graphic novel out but this just popped up on Hoopla when I was looking for something quick to read last night. A very religious Catholic teen struggles with accepting that he's gay. I feel like this would be great for kids in a similar situation to read.

Do Da Dancin'!: Venice Competition vol. 13
Reading: I finished and really enjoyed A Drop of Corruption Robert Jackson Bennett. (Just in time to see the author's, um...deeply unfortunate contribution to the AI conversation [presumably in response to the current Worldcon fiasco {why is there pretty much always a Worldcon fiasco? It's amazing}]. >.<)

I followed that up with Mira Grant's latest, Overgrowth, which I also really enjoyed, and now I'm reading M.L. Wang's Blood Over Bright Haven.

Watching: Extremely minimal. We saw the most recent ep. of TLoU, but I don't think we managed any of The Pitt, so I guess we'll be juggling three shows once Murderbot starts up. (We used to more routinely have multiple shows on the go, but we seem to have somehow lost the knack.) And I haven't started anything new on my own since finishing my Guardian watch-through.

Working: I have manga deadlines both tomorrow and Tuesday, and was thankfully able to give both scripts their final polish and read-through this afternoon, so they're both turned in now.

1. We had a fun time at Disneyland this morning. So much new food! And the 70th anniversary decorations are really coming along. I can't wait to see it next weekend when everything's up.

2. It was hot today but not unbearable. Very sunny and warm when we were in Anaheim, but it was not as hot here, and we had all the windows open so the house wasn't really warm. Tomorrow should be hot but not as hot as today, and then dropping back to lower temps during the week.

3. I took a look at Molly's paw this morning and the scab is gone and it looks totally healed. Her claw was cut back way more than you would normally trim it, so that doesn't look normal, but the pad where the wound was looks back to normal. I'm so glad the healing process was easy and quick.

4. I ordered some more puzzles and they arrived today.
